About South Zeal Victory Hall

The largest community building in South Tawton parish, The Victory Hall has been the village hall since the 1920’s. The South Zeal Victory Hall Management Committee exists to ensure that the Victory Hall is maintained for and is therefore available for use by the community in perpetuity. For this to happen, we are sure that hirers will understand that this means that the hall must be used in a legal, safe and responsible manner at all times.  Download from the Booking page of the website. You may also be interested in our current Risk Assessment – see the bottom of this page.

The Victory Hall is the home of Little Beacons Pre School and is available for regular or one off hire at all other times.

Like other village halls, users may be attending the meetings of local societies and groups, exhibitions, presentations, money raising events, classes of various types and over the years any number of other pursuits.

Due to its reasonable size, it’s also a popular venue for weddings and parties.  Additionally benefiting from a good size stage it’s also a great choice for artistic or musical productions. Not forgetting every August when The Dartmoor Folk Festival use the hall as one of their festival venues.

Disabled access – Disabled access is via the door at the rear of the building, accessed from the lane to the left of the hall.

The door only opens from the inside and must be kept shut when not in use as the lane is privately owned and in constant use. Therefore this door is only to be used for disabled access and as a Fire Escape.

There is a wheelchair ramp, stored opposite the door adjacent to the PA system unit.

Location – Situated in the centre of the thriving Dartmoor village of South Zeal, near Okehampton, Devon.

South Zeal Victory Hall, 8th May 2020. Bedecked with bunting to commemorate the VE75 anniversary, during the period of no public gatherings due to Covid-19.

View our directions page. The hall is in the main street, approximately half way between the Oxenham Arms and the King’s Arms and just up the hill from St Mary’s Chapel. Use Satnav EX20 2JS.

Parking – Whilst there is no off road car park for the hall, the village does offer a public car park further down the road. Take the first right and then right again into the recreation ground.

Key features – The hall particularly benefits from its sizeable main hall; offering a generous capacity of 200 for music/ dancing, 152 for theatre style layout and a recommended 120 maximum when fully seated at tables. Central heating and lighting are included in the hire fee. Coin meters operate the hot water and wall heaters.

Administration

South Zeal Victory Hall is a Foundation under Section 18 of the Charities Act 1960, of which members of South Tawton Parish Council are the Custodian Trustees.

Meeting bi-monthly, with the Annual General Meeting held every November, the hall is managed by a Committee made up of Management Trustees; comprising the main user groups as well as representatives of South Tawton Parish Council plus elected and co-opted members.

The premises are licensed by West Devon Borough Council and we hold the required PRS/PPL licence for the use of music.

Health & Safety

Since 2012, the Management Committee has maintained both a Health and Safety Policy and Risk Assessment for the hall. The Risk Assessment is continually used in order to adhere to our health and safety requirements.
